05 June 2026

Accra will host a high level international conference from 17 to 19 June 2026 focused on advancing the implementation of the landmark United Nations resolution on the trafficking of enslaved Africans.

The event, titled "Next Steps", will bring together policymakers, academics, civil society leaders, and international stakeholders to discuss practical actions arising from the UN resolution. Discussions will centre on translating the resolution into a common framework of actionable commitments aimed at promoting justice, equity, and reparatory measures for communities affected by the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade.

The conference will be hosted by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana and AU Champion on Advancing the Cause of Justice and Payment of Reparations. Ghana has increasingly positioned itself as a leading voice in global conversations on historical justice, reparations, and engagement with the African diaspora.

Organisers say the conference will focus on developing concrete recommendations and collaborative strategies that can support international efforts towards recognition, accountability, and sustainable development.

Registration for the conference is now open through the official event portal.
